Experiments had been made in 1944 to mount the new 7.5cm KwK 44 L/70 gun on the 3 ton halftrack chassis. Field tests proved that the halftrack was too light to handle the gun and the project went no where. But the gun was a significant improvement over previous anti-tank guns, and the need to provide heavy hitting protection against enemy armour remained. With the adoption of the heavier, fully tracked '351' series, this is what the vehicle would have looked like by late 1945.
